I looked over at L.R. who had the same quirky look he gets when he solves some particularly challenging math problem.

I reminded him. “Your work here is not done, Captain. We still need the system validated.”

L.R. Tests the System With Unexpected Results!

L.R. called me about three weeks later.  “I’ve just about got the preliminary testing done.  We ought to meet.”

We agreed to meet in my office. This was a natural choice as his office is usually so cluttered that there isn’t even a spot to sit down.

I met with the math students before they left for Las Vegas. Las Vegas can be pretty overwhelming and I wanted to make sure that these guys had the lowdown on the best places to play and the joints to avoid before they left.

The boys would start their play by spreading out to six different downtown casinos. They could meet for lunch breaks but were again advised to avoid mobbing any casino. 

I wished them good luck and they were off to take down Vegas!

Thomas at the El Cortez!

Thomas liked the El Cortez.  He started playing on a 50¢ wheel and worked his way up as his winnings grew.  He bought in for a total of $50 and worked his way up from there.

The first morning he multiplied his winnings up to $2 bets and felt pretty proud of himself. 

That afternoon he ended up at the $5 betting level.  His winnings totaled $753.  He was very pleased and treated the group to a steak dinner at the El Cortez.

He started the day making $50 bets.  He quickly moved up to $75, then $100 bets.  As a $100 bettor the money was coming so fast he almost didn’t feel like it was real!

He paced himself even though he seemed to have acquired a girlfriend who sat next to him and encouraged him with, “Go Dougie, go!”

In spite of all the attention he kept his head.  At the end of the day he and the girl headed to their comped room at the Flamingo $31,949 richer than he had been just two days earlier!

Carl Starts Small and Ends Up Betting Big!

Carl played a little at the El Cortez and decided that playing next to a man who smelled like a mixture of stale wine and garbage just didn’t cut it for him.

He moved over to the D Las Vegas, found a $1 table and starting playing.

By noon he was ready for a change and moved to a more upscale table at the Golden Nugget.

He later told me, “I never thought of myself as a snob, but I do have my standards and the Nugget suits them better than any other downtown joint.”

Carl finished his first day up $1,590.  The next day he headed for the Las Vegas Strip. Aria offers European Roulette with $25 minimums and Carl arrived at 9:34 in the morning ready to play.

He found a table where he was the only player and by noon he had moved up to making $100 bets.  A floor person suggested that he might like playing in the high-limit area as there was one table open there.

At lunchtime he took a break and treated himself to a hamburger and onion rings in the coffee shop and planned his afternoon.

Although he was not supposed to go beyond $100 betting he saw no reason why he shouldn’t play at a higher level. He now had $18,903 in winnings and could easily go to $300 bets.  He worked out the numbers for his bets on the back of a blackjack strategy card, stuck it in his pocket and headed for the hi-limit area.

In the old days he might have felt intimidated by this area as the players used to dress up for this level play.  

Now days the high rollers were indistinguishable from the rest of the pack except there seemed to be more foreigners playing at the $100 minimum single-zero wheel. He bought in for $18,000 pulling out piles of cash.  The floor person kindly suggested that for future play he could deposit his cash with the cashier and just sign markers for the cash he needed for play.

They asked for his name and started calling him Mr. C.  Thirty minutes after he started play he received a full RFB (Room, Food and Beverage) comp. 

After about an hour and a half he took a break, walked over to an empty table, took a seat and figured out the bets he would need for $500 play!

He had to admit he was a little nervous at this point.  At the floorman’s suggestion he was escorted to the casino cashier where he deposited $30,000 keeping $1,200 as his pocket money.

He returned to the $500 table and signed a marker for $30,000.  The floorman nodded and smiled acknowledging his change of demeanor using a marker to buy in.

Carl quickly found that the easiest way to cope with $500 betting was to just think of the $500-valued chips as $5 chips.  “This way when I had a stack of 20 chips in front of me I just thought of it as $100 rather than $10,000!”

Carl closed out the second day, paid off his marker and was escorted to the cashier’s cage with an armed guard.

The reason was simple.  In addition to the $30,000, still on deposit with the cashier, he was bringing in another $51,890 in cash to deposit.

Carl decided to take the last day off.  His total winnings were $83,092 and he wisely decided not to risk it.  He texted me about what to do with all the cash.  I gave him some options and he finally decided to keep $3,000 in cash and take the rest in the form on a casino check he could carry with him.

I reassured him that Aria’s check wouldn’t bounce.  “They’re good for it kid. Just don’t lose it.”

The Vegas Boys Return!

The grad students came back on a Friday night.  They didn’t act like the math geeks who had boarded the plane four days earlier.

Thomas had changed his wardrobe, picking up some new duds at the Fashion Show Shopping Mall in Las Vegas.

Doug got off the plane with his new girlfriend in tow.  I thought they looked really cute and hoped his romance would last longer than I suspected it might.

Carl looked the same but he had sort of a jaunty air about him.  It was well earned, as he was the big winner of the group.
